According to an Electronics Industry Promotion Association survey personal computer shipments in Japan for the third quarter of fiscal 1989 – the September-to-December quarter – were up 8% on the same quarter last year, at 605,000 units – but the rise-and rise of high-end 80386-based machines meant that by value, sales were up 20% to $1,700m; business in Japan rose 9% by number, exports grew 5%; by processor size the numbers broke down to 17,000 32-bit, 245,000 16-bit and 108,000 8-bit.
