SurfControl Enterprise Threat Shield is actually designed to deliver protection from a range of emerging threats in addition to spyware, but that’s the one everybody is focusing on right now, said Martino Corbelli, marketing director for the UK and Ireland at the Scotts Valley, California-based company.
We detected a gap in the market, because the other products offering anti-spyware protection may stop it from executing, but they neither cure the infection not the cause of the infection, which is user abuse, Corbelli said.
To this end, Threat Shield is centrally managed, with network admin pushing tamperproof clients out to the individual machines in an organization. Furthermore, it monitors a heartbeat from each machine and, when it fails to detect one, reactivates the client or, if necessary, reinstalls it.
Threat Shield also blocks removable media such as USB keys and CDs, which are frequently the sources of spyware, Corbelli said. Threat Shield is licensed on a per user basis, the price for a 500-user site being GBP 12.50 ($24) per user.
