Fremont, California-based Messagesoft has targeted the market in China, and as a result of the deal, SurfControl will acquire a distribution operation in China and a foothold in one of the world’s fastest growing markets.
SurControl is buying the operations from Messagesoft owners SecureM Inc, with an initial cash payment of $9.68m and a further payment of up to $5m, depending on sales levels for the remainder of this year.
SurfControl said Messagesoft’s secure messaging gateway has the capacity to handle other messaging types such as SMS and MMS and third-party content analysis such as SurfControl’s Antispam and antivirus agent. It will be launched as SurfControl’s email appliance later this year and the company hopes it will enable it to penetrate those sectors of the market that prefer Linux-based appliances such as security-conscious large organizations, as well as medium-sized companies.
What helped SurfControl to part with its money was an IDC report that forecast that the appliance segment of the secure content management market will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 70% until 2007 when it will have a value of $1.6bn.
