Microsoft has released an update to its Surface Pro 2 tablets to fix glitches which reduced battery life and unexpected wake/sleep behaviour.
The press release said: "This weekend we released an update that addresses the unexpected wake and battery drain behavior experienced by a small number of Surface Pro 2 customers who installed the December Windows Update. This should have no impact on users already running the October Windows Update. We’re working hard to address the remaining Surface Pro 2 items from the December Windows Update."
The December 10 update was pulled before it could cause too much damage, but thousands of users still managed to download the upgrade.
It was reported to drain battery power much faster, prevent the tablets from charging fully and not displaying notifications to indicate a fully-charged state.
Wake and sleep mode issues were also reported, with the main issue being that devices were not going into sleep mode even with the cover closed.
Before Last December’s update, an October update of Windows RT 8.1 was pulled after some Surface RT owners complained of freezing issues.
At the start of this year, Microsoft started shipping the Surface Pro 2 with a new processor.
The upgrade is to a 1.9GHz Core i5 4300 from an Intel 1.6GHz Core i5 4200U processor, which was shipped with the device in its October release.
"I returned my Surface Pro 2 (v. 256GB) because of the poor performance after the failed 12.10.13 firmware update. I recall the SP2 I returned having a i5 4200U processor. To my surprise, when I checked the System Properties in the Control Panel on my replacement SP2, the processor was upgraded to a i5 4300U @ 1.9Ghz. – 2.5 Ghz," a Surface Pro 2 owner stated on Microsoft’s official support forum.
