SUPPORT WORRIES FORCE JAPANESE FIRM TO UPGRADE WINDOWS

By CBR Staff Writer

Japanese synthetic fiber manufacturer Toray Industries Inc faces a major big bang upgrade from Windows 3.1 to Windows 98, according to the Nikkei Computer newswire. Toray plans to upgrade 3,500 client PCs from November of this year, because it’s worried about the support services its getting for 3.1. Microsoft will now only help with software debugging if a special contract is in place, says the wire. Toray said it had stayed with Windows 3.1 because of its stability and due to the cost of changing applications code from 16 to 32-bit.
