Sun Microsystems Inc’s SunSoft Japan unit is going for the big one in that market, working to get its Solaris x86 version of Unix up on the runaway market leader in the personal computer sector, NEC Corp’s PC-9800 family, which still has about 50% of the market. According to Nikkan Kogyo, NEC and Sunsoft Japan have been negotiating for two years on the effort, and that the NEC version of Solaris is expected out by the summer. The partners declined direct comment on the report, and insisted that any announcement was premature, and that the negotiations might come to nothing.
