Sun Microsystems Inc’s Sparc Technology Business is ready to announce SuperSparc II any time now. A 75MHz version of the part, which is already in the field, is expected to be launched as an interim offering before the SuperSparc II’s intended clock speed of 90MHz can be achieved in volume parts. Sun’s Sparc Technology Business, which denies it has had any kind of problem implementing the bi-endian portion of its newest UltraSparc, is less clear about what happens to its low-end single-chip microSparc implementation. Third party Sparcsystem builders see a low-end UltraSparc stretching down to become the next-generation part, dubbed the microSparc III. Sparc Technology Business claims that this is not necessarily the case, but admits that microSparc III will use a different architecture from the one that is currently implemented.
