SUN’S MERCED DEAL WITH INTEL HAS COMPETITON WORRIED

Sounds like they are all getting worried about Sun Microsystems Inc’s deal with Intel Corp on development of Solaris x86 for the forthcoming 64-bit Merced chip. Hewlett-Packard Co will this week do its best to head off any momentum Sun may be creating by trumpeting the fact that a handful of software vendors including Baan NV and Oracle Corp have already begun certifying their applications on the HP-UX 11.0 operating system that will run on Merced.
