Sun Microsystems Inc CEO Scott McNealy seems about as likely to start selling Windows NT boxes as he is to give up jibing Microsoft Corp. But even if McNealy doesn’t plan to join the ranks of his fellow Unix vendors and become what he dismissively calls an NT reseller, that does not mean he is unrealistic about the need for NT support in his company’s Solaris Unix operating system. Later this week in New York the company will reveal details of the next revision of Solaris (it’s currently at 2.6), as well as its plans for beefing up support for NT beyond the storage and directories level. Talking yesterday via video link to an IDC forum in Paris – after a summons to Washington made his presence impossible – McNealy made characteristic digs at Microsoft and rang the knell of doom for other Unixes suggesting the two Unixes that survive will be Solaris and NT.
