Sun Microsystems Inc has decided to get all 20 of its JavaOS partners in a row declaring their support for a 1.0 release of the operating system, presumably because of the flak the company has taken over the girth and speed of its Java operating system. Sun claims the full-blown Java Application Environment (which includes Java class libraries, the Java virtual machine and JavaOS for supporting a range of applet viewers) runs in 2.4Mb on Sparc or Intel processors. A version for the Advanced RISC Machine Ltd StrongARM RISC is due later this month. Sun is also cooking up JavaOS-related announcements for the JavaOne developer conference next month with NC partners including IBM Corp, also a JavaOS licensee.
