Sun Microsystems Inc has released Java Foundation Classes version 1.1, codenamed Swing, which comprises a set of reusable Java interface JavaBean components for building native, Java look and feel interfaces (NBD 12/11/97). It includes things such as tool bars, choosers, buttons and menus. The next version of the JFCs, co-developed by Sun, IBM Corp and Netscape Communications Corp, will include multimedia controls, a 2D API and cross-platform drag and drop. It will be a core part of the next cut of the Java Development Kit, JDK 1.2, due in the summer, but already available in beta on Sun’s web site. Applications using JFC 1.1 components will support Java applications written using JDK 1.1 or 1.2, says Sun.
