The settlement covers a total of 24 charges that Sun broke Department of Commerce rules on technology sales to restricted nations. The DoC said late Monday that Sun also has its export privileges denied for a year, but that denial is suspended.
The DoC said that in 1997 Sun exported an enterprise server to the Changsha Institute of Science and Technology (CIST) in China. CIST offers courses specializing in missile and rocket research and development technology the DoC said.
The DoC also claimed that later that year Sun exported two servers to Egypt knowing that the Egyptian army was the end-user. US export controls call for companies to obtain a special license before selling high-performance computers to certain nations.
