Reporting fourth quarter figures, opposite, Sun Microsystems Inc said that during the period net ord-ers rose more than 40% to a record level of more than $1,500m, reflecting robust demand for the com-pany’s products in every part of the world. Sun Microsystems Computer Corp shipped a record 82,000 systems, and increase of more than 21% over the previous quarter and a 16% increase over the year ago quarter. The SunSoft Inc unit distributed 111,000 Solaris Unix licences during the quarter.Completing the cheerful picture, the new Sparcstation 5 and Sparcstation 20 workstations each surpassed the company’s previous fastest ramp to volume, with more workstations shipped in their quarter of introduction than any new system in the company’s history, and the Mountain View company believes it is well positioned to continue to benefit as enterprises adopt open networked computing. Nevertheless, turnover for the fiscal year to June 30 was up only 9% to $4,690m; profit rose by 25%.
