Sun Microsystems Inc has ported its Solaris Resource Manager software onto 64-bit Solaris 7, and says it plans to help customers integrate the product more closely with its clustering technology, Sun Cluster 2.2. Both products are being used as part of server consolidation projects Sun is increasingly offering to its customers.
The first version of Resource Manager was shipped last December for 32-bit Solaris 2.6, while Sun Cluster 2.2 began shipping for both environments in March. Sun has now certified that the software runs with Sun Cluster in the same environments for high-availability configurations, and will be releasing white papers and blueprints to help with the integration work. The Resource Manager ensures that each application receives the level of resources it needs to do its job. The combination is aimed at data center users and service providers. Digital Island Inc is one of the earliest customers.
Resource Manager 1.1 for Solaris 7 is due out next month. Base retail price is $4,000. Sun Cluster 2.2 is $4,000 per node.
