SUN SAYS MARKET RESEARCH WILL SHOW IT’S NO1 IN UNIX SERVERS

By CBR Staff Writer

In response to Hewlett-Packard Co’s cry for Sun Microsystems Inc to show it some numbers to back its sales claims (CI No 3,206), president Ed Zander says his company is already out-selling number one Unix server supplier HP in unit and revenue terms and that new reports from IDC, Dataquest and other market research companies which count computer system shipments and installations will back it up. Zander says Sun’s servers are also the number one development platforms for customers implementing Baan, SAP and other application solutions. Although it would like nothing better than to deep-six Windows NT, Sun says its recent call for greater co-existence between its Solaris Unix and NT (CI No 3,206), is no more than a reality-check, and an acknowledgment of the state of the market.
