Sun Microsystems Inc president Ed Zander predicts the company will overhaul Hewlett-Packard Co as the leading supplier of Unix servers in revenue and unit shipments by the end of the year. Sun has a bunch of new products in the pipeline, including a major new line of high-end servers which will ship by mid-1998. Zander says the company will address ccNUMA technology within a year or two. It’s new workgroup servers, designed to go up against the four-way Intel-based NT server crowd will ship in the next few months. There are also new versions of the JavaOS technologies due next quarter, plus the HotSpot compiler, HotJava Views, and a new cut of the JDK cut plus a slew of mouse click wrapped binary Java programs which will be downloaded rather than bought off-the-shelf. Sun says it expects to begin announcing converts to its Solaris-on-Intel Unix from other versions of Unix-on-Intel operating systems imminently.
