Sun Microsystems Inc says it plans to build a Java platform standard extension for extensible markup language (XML) through the Java Community process. The extension will take the form of an industry-developed application programming interface (API) which developers can use to integrate XML with the Java platform. At the X-Tech XML-fest in San Jose, Sun released an initial outline of the API. This can read, manipulate and generate XML- based streams and formats. These core features should form the building blocks for developing full XML applications, the company says. Sun has also released an experimental XML language parser and parse tree, under the name Java Project X.
