Hewlett-Packard Co says it was stunned by Sun Microsystems Inc’s recent admission that it sold only 600Tb of storage in its fourth last quarter (CI No 3,454). HP claims it sells more of its own arrays – including AutoRAID and Nike – than this every quarter, and a substantially larger amount of storage from its partners including EMC and Data General. It wonders, given the ratio of storage to server sales revenue – it claims about one out of every three systems dollars is spent on storage – Does this mean there could be a touch of inflation in the overall Unix server sales business attributed to Sun, especially in relation to HP’s?
