Mountain View, California-based Sun Microsystems Computer Corp claims to have the first PCMCIA interface board for a Unix workstation and says the new PCMCIA Interface SBus board will enable Sun Sparcstation users to add many of the 250 or more cards currently on the market to their stations. Sun also claims to be the first workstation vendor to support PCMCIA across its entire line of desktops: the new board adapts a Sparcstation’s SBus expansion slot so that it can accept up to two Type-II or one Type-III PCMCIA cards, greatly increasing the systems’ expandability, Sun says. It needs Solaris 2.3 up and costs $300; the interface logic is provided via an SBus-to-PCMCIA ASIC chip that can be licensed from Sun’s Sparc Technology Business, and drivers are currently available for serial and modem communication devices, with full PCMCIA card services expected by year-end.
