Word is that Sun Microsystems Inc is planning a Tsunami low-end Sparc-based machine, the Sparcstation 2+, which will be a low-end colour machine starting at $5,000, but running 20% to 30% faster than the existing Sparcstation 2. But there has been speculation that Sun will turn its own plants over to high-end machines and will not build another generation of desktop workstations. The suggestion is that it will instead design the things and license their manufacture, buying what it wants back OEM. Designs such as the Sparcstation 2 and the Sparcstation 10 can be more cheaply produced by the cloners such as Tatung of America Inc, CompuAdd Corp and such, who have volume access to the colour monitor market.
