Sun Microsystems Inc’s chief executive Scott McNealy revealed that he is looking at ways of suing Microsoft Corp on anti- competition grounds at yesterday’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on monopoly practices in the software industry. McNealy, responding to a question from the committee regarding whether there is a need for new laws to curb anti-competitive practices, McNealy said no, but we are investigating the opportunity of bring our own antitrust case. It is the first time McNealy has admitted as much in public. Netscape Communications Corp chief executive Jim Barksdale said his company has no intention of taking private action, and anyhow, I don’t think my company could afford it, he said. In his opening statement to the committee, McNealy asserted that he believes in winners and losers and the freedom of fail, emphasizing his belief that the current antitrust laws are sufficient to control monopolies.
