Sun Microsystems Inc has confirmed stories circulating earlier this week about its plans to separate its Java standards activities from the revenue generating divisions of its Java Software Division (CI No 3,418). But Sun says it won’t announce the details of its changes until next month. The plans call for the Java Software Division – under Alan Baratz – to be divided into four divisions, including a Java Platform Division, a development program division for all Sun Microsystems Java technologies, a tools and compilers division, and an enterprise solutions division working on everything from applications servers through to web top client environments. The Java Platform division will be completely separate from the revenue producing divisions, and will be under the charge of one person – Sun wouldn’t confirm rumors that that person would be John Kannegaard – who will also be charged with the task of holding the Java industry alliance together.
