SUN CHIP WORK FORGES AHEAD; IBM TO BUILD THEM?

By CBR Staff Writer

As Microprocessor Report observes, Sun Microsystems Inc clearly hasn’t thrown in the microprocessor towel yet. It supposedly has 100 people working on the design of its next-generation UltraSparc-5 chip, code-named Millennium (CI No 3,487). Although Texas Instruments Inc currently builds the Usparcs, PC Week suggests it might have IBM Microelectronics build the chips in its copper or silicon-on-insulator processes. IBM Corp couldn’t be reached by press time.
