At Sun Microsystems Inc’s Inside Sun Software event held in Menlo Park a few weeks ago, Sun chief executive officer Scott McNealy was berating the inadequacies of Microsoft Corp’s Windows CE operating system for embedded applications, as compared to Sun’s Java. Scaled down as it was from the full fat client of Windows, he said, it could never hope to be used for smart card applications such as a next generation intelligent credit cards, for instance. If it was, he said you’d have to redesign the pockets of every pair of trousers in the land.
