In its second acquisition of the day, Sun Microsystems acquired Boulder, Colorado-based Redcape Policy Software Inc yesterday for its Java-based storage management software. Boulder, Colorado-based Redcape has used Java to create an automated policy software framework for open systems, which Sun intends to integrate with its own StorEdge software family. The aim is to simplify complex storage management tasks by automating many of the manual operations currently used in the storage world, a situation made more important as the demand for data warehousing, data mining, online transaction processing and internet and intranet applications has grown from Sun’s own customers. Policy management software enables a system to be managed to meet set levels of service and performance. Redcape was founded in February 1996 by Thomas Awe and David Skinner, who both came from Fujitsu Ltd’s Advanced Systems Group, and has around 20 staff. Its technology has been used as part of Legato Systems Inc’s GEMS storage management product line using the JMAPI Java Management API (CI No 3,140), and by Siemens Nixdorf Informationssysteme AG. All the staff have been offered jobs and the unit will remain in Boulder, but run as part of Sun’s Network Storage division.
