IBM Corp and Sun Microsystems Inc may combine forces in a bid to knock Computer Associates International Inc’s Unicenter TNG (The Next Generation) off its perch. They plan to merge the resources of IBM’s Tivoli Systems Inc with Sun’s management capabilities to produce a joint network, systems and applications management product. A report in Information Week says the pair will combine Tivoli’s core TME-10 enterprise management software with Sun’s Java and Java Management application programming interfaces into a product code named Corona. The plan then is to integrate Sun’s SunNet Manager network management software into Corona, which will jointly owned, developed, and marketed by the two companies. Neither company would comment on the talks, but it’s understood that Sun needs the systems and applications management pieces that TME-10 brings, while Tivoli needs a Java injection. Corona will retain the SunNet and NetView application programming interfaces for a while before the network management capabilities are built straight into the product.
