Sun is assuming that the change of ownership of the JBuilder business and its delayed migration to the rival Eclipse framework provides a good excuse to get Borland customers thinking of alternatives.
Of course, given that the NetBeans IDE, is already an open source product that is free to developers, the best that Sun could muster is offering 60 days of free migration support to JBuilder customers. That promotion is good for 60 days, until October 14, 2006.
Sun is also offering JBuilder-to-NetBeans migration two-day workshops for a price of $8,200 for up to 12 people at Sun or at the customer site.
A new offering, the workshop is not part of the temporary promotion and will be available after the freebie support wears off. Pricing may vary for more remote global sites.
The NetBeans framework remains a distant runner-up to Eclipse in third party support.
