Hewlett-Packard Co, which will continue to enhance the embedded ChaiVM ‘clean room’ version of Java it has created without recourse to Sun Microsystems Inc’s intellectual property is really drawing ire over at Sun. Asked whether the new license model Sun is introducing will be acceptable to HP and other ‘cloners’, COO Ed Zander said he’s not clear what HP’s agenda is. At least it’s not a Java agenda! he exclaimed. Moreover Zander accused HP of effectively pursuing a strategy of OJF – opposing Java forever – in the same way that HP was instrumental in creating the ill-fated Open Software Foundation, which Sun always claimed stood for ‘oppose Sun forever.’
