SUMITOMO METAL CE AND PARTNERS TO BUILD LINE OF PORTABLE PCs

By CBR Staff Writer

Sumitomo Metal Control Engineering and two obscure partners have teamed to design and build an 80XX6-based line of portable personal computer for factory and laboratory automation: called the Multiware series, the line is topped by the MW38DM with 80386 and 80286 processors, the former to run MS-DOS, the latter Intel’s real-time iRMX-286, the two operating systems linked by interrupt handling and shared memory; Multiware prices start at $13,230 for the 38RX1 model, which has only an 80386 running iRMX, and Sumitomo looks to sell 500 systems in the first year.
