San Jose, California-based StrataCom Inc has announced an extension to its Asynchronous Transer Mode Wide Area Network architecture. Aimed at the virtual enterprise network, the Intelligent Network Server is a scalable software system that will offer dial-up Frame Relay and Switched Virtual Circuit capabilities, says the company. According to StrataCom, the Intelligent Network Server will support dial-up Frame Relay access via Integrated Services Digital Network, thereby freeing users currently connecting to Frame Relay networks from their dependence on dedicated leased lines. It will also facilitate the migration of critical applications, such as those supported by Systems Network Architecture, to Frame Relay networks, as a dial back-up link can rapidly and automatically re-establish communications, says the company. The offering is also said to allow Asynchronous Transfer Mode and Frame Relay Switched Virtual Circuits across the wide area networks, enabling dynamic any-to-any communications on an as-needed basis. The Intelligent Network Server will initially run on a Unix workstation, says the firm. It will be priced from $15,000. Field trials will begin next quarter.
