A few months back in this spot, we made the assertion ridiculous in retrospect – that the way the industry was heading, at the end of the decade, Microsoft Corp would merge with Nintendo Co Ltd and the game would be over: underlining how quickly these things change, yesterday, AT&T Co and Sega Enterprises Ltd’s Sega of America Inc announced that they will introduce a communications system that will make video game play possible over standard phone lines using The Edge 16, set for release by next summer, which will plug directly into Sega’s Genesis video game system; and Japan Air Lines announced that it will replace Nintendo machines with Sega games on its major international routes starting on July 1, installing games with 5 colour monitors in each of its planes operating between Tokyo and New York, London, Paris and San Francisco – all of which makes it quite clear that the scenario is that in 2000, Microsoft will merge with Sega – game over.
