When IBM launches its new top-end 3380 disk drives – capacity of 7.2 Gb and launch in the second half of September are currently favoured – it will find Storage Technology Corp waiting for it. StorageTek reportedly has succeeded in fabricating thin film heads that can read 2,000 tracks per inch against the current 800 tracks per inch of the 3380, making 7.2Gb drives a breeze.
