Storage Technology Corp, the Louisville, Colorado IBM plug-compatible peripherals manufacturer just out of Chapter XI bankruptcy protection, yesterday announced the 4380Subsystem addition to its solid-state disk alternative. The 4380 Solid-State Disk Subsystem provides improved price performance by expanding capacity and performance options and is claimeed to outper-form magnetic disks seven to 10-fold. Available in capacities of 48Mb to 3.072Gb, a 4380 Subsystem can contain four or eight storage modules, each with a capacity of 12Mb, 24Mb, 48Mb, 96Mb, 192Mb, 288Mb or 384Mb. Different sizes may be intermixed. An optional integrated battery backup unit is available, providing protection of critical data for one to three hours. No software modifications are needed to use the 4380 with 370 and XA releases of MVS and VM or DOS/VSE. The minimum 4380 Subsystem consists of a 4000-022 Control Unit and 4385 Storage Unit with 48Mb, and costs $204,100. A Quad Port 4380 Subsystem with two 4000-022 Control Units; a 4385 Storage Unit; a 4386 Storage Unit with a total capacity of 768Mb and two battery backup units is $971,000. General availability with up to 768Mb begins in the fourth quarter with the expanded capacity of up to 3Gb out in the second quarter 1988.
