Storage Technology Corp is due next Tuesday to unveil what it describes as a major new product for information storage and retrieval – its Cimarron juke-box system for loading and demounting up to 6,000 IBM 3480-type tape cartridges automatically. Expected to be baptised Nearline when it is unveiled, the product will be unveiled at NBC Studios in New York, with a satellite link to the company’s Louisville, Colorado headquarters. No word on when first ships are likely to be made, but StorageTek is hoping that the product will generate $1,000m in revenue over five years.
