Storage Technology Corp has come out with a tape cartridge subsystem that enables Unix systems on a network to share access to the StorageTek 4400 Automated Cartridge System library. The 4781/4780 shared cartridge subsystem connects via SCSI and currently supports Sun Microsystems Inc, nCube Inc, Alliant Computer Systems Corp, Pyramid Technology Corp and Solbourne Computer Inc machines. Support for other machines is in the plan, and the system supports networks of mixed machines from the list supported. The 4781/4780 offers a maximum data rate into the 4781 controller of 5Mbytes per second, and up to seven computers can access the 4781/4780 subsystem simultaneously. The company did not give any prices for it.
