STC SHARES $400m PACIFIC CABLE CONTRACT WITH NEC

Cable & Wireless Plc has given the contract for the US end of 5,828-mile PPAC-1 transpacific fibre optic cable to STC Plc, which will be responsible for 3,515 miles of the cable, while the International Digital Communications consortium in which Cables is a leading player has awarded the other end to NEC Corp. Laying of the cable starts in spring 1990, and the work is expected to take about nine months.
