Bootstrapped startup Avatron Software has launched a Kickstarter fundraiser to help develop its new ‘post-cloud’ solution, Everydisk.
Five-year-old Avatron hopes the Everydisk app – designed for Mac and PC – will get the $50,000 funding necessary to develop it beyond the prototype and release a beta test version.
The app would create a secure and direct connection between the computer you are currently using and all other such devices you own, meaning a remote computer’s hard drive appears on your desktop, as if you were plugged in directly.
Avatron founder and ex-Apple employee Dave Howell said: "You can then click through all your folders on that drive, or anydrive or networked server connected to that remote computer."
The data never goes through Avatron’s servers, the company claims, simply staying on the machines linked up to each other, which may be a boon to the privacy-conscious in the wake of the NSA revelations.
Howell added: "Why should we have to pay hundreds of dollars per year for cloud storage when desktop hard drives are so affordable?"
If the fundraising goal is reached by January 25, the app should be rolled out to both Mac and PC in the second half of the year.
