There are now over 5m subscribers to the intercity telephone services offered by the start-up independents licensed to compete with Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corp’s telephone service within Japan: Dainidenden is the market leader with over 2m subscribers, followed by Telecom Japan with 1.8m and Japan High-Speed Communications with 1.3m.
