Internet service provider Star Technology Group Ltd yesterday said it has received 10m pounds ($16m) in funding to expand the company and further develop its managed email services. The funding, led by two private investors and RIT Capital Partners Plc values the Cirencester, UK-based firm at 40m pounds ($64m).
Star has two operating companies: Star Internet, a business ISP with 9,000 clients, and Starlabs, an email management service that likes to be thought of as an application service provider (ASP). Currently Starlabs offers virus-screening at an outsourced service to ISPs wanting to offer the same to their customers, using software from Cybersoft Inc, McAfee.com Corp, and Data Fellows Corp. The investment will go some way to help the company, which counts UUNet Inc’s UK arm among its customers, extend the range of services to cover spam and porn filtering as well as security and compression.
Star was spun out of Cisco distributor RBR Networks Ltd following its purchase by Datatec Systems Inc in October 1998.
