Storage management and remote access software provider Stac Inc has announced the launch of ReachOut 7, an updated version of its remote access software application for personal computers connected to the Internet. The San Diego, California-based company says that the new version of Reachout is the only such application that supports Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 3.1, MS-DOS and 32-bit Web browsers. The product, which is available immediately throughout the world, is designed to aid the home and business user, with corporate intranet users and help desk personnel specifically in mind. Stac has updated the security on ReachOut 7, integrating the Windows NT User Manager for a single user name and password list. The user of a host system is then able to decide exactly who, how much, and when access can be gained to their system, if at all. The home or business user is able to log into the system and access information, for example from their personal computer to their laptop from anywhere around the world. Stac, which was established in 1983 and employs 150 in the US and the UK, believes that new users will be able to use the system with relative ease thanks to the ReachOut Passport which is delivered as an ActiveX control or a plug-in, with thin clients providing familiar looking Web browser remote control access. ReachOut 7 for Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 3.1 and MS-DOS is priced at $190 and $70 for the ReachOut user upgrade. Stac says that helpdesk services will benefit from the product, enabling them to talk directly to the user who has a problem via the Chat function, and enabling them to log on to to a system which is experiencing difficulties, from their own computer.
