St. Vincent will implement the platform in the hope of eliminating paper records and enabling its physicians to instantly access up-to-date clinical information on patients.

We believe the electronic health record is becoming the ‘standard of care’ in American healthcare and we expect St. Vincent Health will be one of the leaders driving that change, said Bruce Haga, vice president of the St. Vincent Physician Network.

St. Vincent said it will initially roll out TouchWorks at its medical faculty and two Indianapolis practice sites, with the eventual aim of extending the Electronic Health Record (HER) to its teaching clinics and practice sites. Haga added that he expects to offer the EHR as an incentive for independent physicians to link to the system.

The TouchWorks EHR automates activities such as prescriptions, ordering lab tests, viewing test results and documenting clinical encounters. Allscripts also claims that the product offers enhances patient safety measures including automated medical practice guidelines and alerts that warn physicians of potentially dangerous drug interactions.

St. Vincent Health will integrate TouchWorks with its existing Flowcast practice management solution from Burlington, Vermont-based IDX Systems Corporation, which will directly link clinical and financial activities and drive operational improvements in non-hospital based offices.
