Irvine, California-based New Media Corp and Newport Beach, California-based SRS Labs Inc have an agreement for SRS to license its three-dimensional sound technology to New Media. New Media will incorporate SRS Labs’ sound system into future portable computing products. SRS Labs’ Sound Retrieval System restores audio realism lost by traditional stereo. This audio technology produces a three-dimensional sound image from any audio source with two ordinary loudspeakers. It is claimed to expand the signal and embrace the listener with a three-dimensional sound field, whether the audio signal is mono, stereo or encoded. It also retrieves audio cues that enable the human hearing system to determine from what direction a sound arrives. By restoring these signals, Sound Retrieval System expands the sound field and immerses the listener in three-dimensional sound. As it does not change the original programme material, there is no sweet spot or single point in the room where the highest quality sound can be heard – instead, any spot in the room delivers the same sound. It can be used to record or play back music, movie soundtracks, video games – or any other audio source, and it requires no encoding or decoding.
