When Spyglass Inc demonstrated a Java-based TV Guide at the Embedded Systems conference in San Jose last week, eyebrows were raised. Since WebTV had said it will not support Java in its set- top boxes, some reasoned, where was the market? Director of business development Wayne Yurtin explains: Javawise, we’re just getting customers asking us about Java. Do we do it, can we support it? The TV Guide is proof that they do and can. Spyglass also announced a new version of its Device Mosaic, 3.1, with support for JavaScript and SSL and email integration. The web browser works in digital cable, satellite TV, wireless and other non-PC environments. Device Mosaic 3.1 is already enjoying an enthusiastic reception. Motorola and Nokia have said they will use it in their respective Digital TV product lines.
