SPYGLASS OPENS EUROPEAN OFFICE

By CBR Staff Writer

Spyglass Inc is taking its vision to put the world and its toaster onto the Web to Europe, with the opening of Spyglass Europe Ltd and the appointment of a European managing director (CI No 3,078). Spyglass says it has seen increasing demand from Europe for its Web device technology and services. The developer of the Mosaic browser technology is working with real-time operating system vendors to embed browsers, or viewers that connect to browsers, into everything from mobile phones to photocopiers (CI No 3,057). Doug Colbeth, Spyglass president and chief executive, said the company is in discussions with leading consumer, office automation and industrial device manufacturers in Europe, and also the Pacific-Rim, making a European presence critical to the company’s future growth. Jay Friedland, vice president of marketing, SurfWatch products, admitted the company currently does very little business in Europe, but said it hopes to see around one third of its revenues coming from Europe by the year 2000. Spyglass has appointed David Harris-Evans European managing director. Harris-Evans joins Spyglass from Seagate Software, formerly Palindrome Corp, where he had been European managing director for six years. Based in new European headquarters in Windsor, UK, Harris-Evans said that he will be talking to cellular phone companies including LM Ericsson Telefon AB, and Nokia Oy, and infrastructure companies such as British Telecommunications Plc, France Telecom and Deutsche Telecom. Harris-Evans will also be selling the company’s consultancy and professional services, which offer design and implementation support to device manufacturers.
