SPI Technologies, known globally as a provider of value-added information technology services, is set to open the Content Sciences office in Laguna, which the company plans to link to its Manila headquarters through a fiber-based, Switch 4900-powered infrastructure. Teams in the new facility, which formally opens in November this year, will be responsible for creating the world’s largest web repository of Scientific, Technical and Medical (STM) information.

The planned infrastructure development aims to further increase service efficiency and improve internal network performance, especially following the introduction of more network-intensive business applications.

SPI Technologies provides content conversion for general, scientific, legal and library requirements; business process outsourcing; software engineering; and e-call center services through its team of Filipino knowledge workers serving clients in the United States, Europe, and Asia.

According to Joey Phil N. Corpuz, SPI Technologies Technology Infrastructure Department Manager, the Switch 4900 would sit at the core of its planned new network infrastructure, right on the backbone. Using the Switch 4900, the company’s network will deliver more robustness, reliability, and speed in the support of internal business applications, customer relationship management platforms, and other information technology facilities.

The switch, Corpuz added, would allow SPI Technologies to enhance application deployment, limit service downtime, and allow flexibility and reliability in the delivery of information throughout the organization. Using high-performance Gigabit Ethernet switching over multimode fiber cabling, the Switch 4900 offers SPI Technologies the most cost-effective way to speed up the network in a fiber-based environment.

In addition, SPI Technologies IT Manager Mark Start says, The switch introduces ingenious enhancements to the active component of our network without the high cost of similar solutions from other vendors. It gives us extra functionality to deliver results in our service provision.

The SPI Technologies network includes an existing base of 3Com Switch 3300s, which have already accounted for vastly more efficient delivery of network services. The 3300 switch delivers low cost, plug-and-play Fast Ethernet configuration, with 10/100 autosensing that automatically adjusts to the speed of attached devices. It offers Gigabit Ethernet uplinks as well.

Start also mentioned that the switches offer best value because of proven high performance, reliable after-sales support, and the lowest cost in network investments.

All 3Com switches come bundled with 3Com Network Supervisor (3NS), a remarkably easy-to-use management tool designed for small and medium networks. The 3NS automatically maps the user’s network topology and provides an intuitive graphical user interface to help identify areas of congestion or parts of the network that need upgrading. It also offers advanced features that enhance network performance, including stress monitoring, event logging and alert generation functions.

3Com offers the best value as our network grows, Start said. We do not need to invest heavily on hardware or on additional staff to improve network performance.

Both switches offer economical switching ideal for growing bandwidth requirements, with support for a wide array of 3Com 10/100 switches and a modular architecture allowing gigabit functionality in a variety of network environments.
