Through the deal RTM, a Wellingborough, Northamptonshire-based company has become a wholly-owned subsidiary of SST – a leading provider of outsourced antenna and shared network infrastructure solutions to wireless operators in Europe. R T Masts was founded in 1958, specialising in erection of masts and aerials. Over the last four years, the company has expanded significantly, and now employs around 180 people offering a broad range of services to operators, from site rigging, antenna installation and maintenance, to mast construction and project management.

Steve Copley, Chief Operating Officer of SpectraSite Transco, said: There is high demand from wireless providers for quality infrastructure services to support deployment of 2G and 3G networks. Currently, there are around 25,000 masts across the UK and it is estimated that at least up to 60,000 new sites could be required over the next three to five years. Even with co-location, where multiple operators share a single site this is a mammoth task. It makes sense for operators to focus on their core business of creation and delivery of customer services, rather than building their infrastructure.

Bringing R T Masts into the SST organisation extends further our already considerable capabilities to meet the infrastructure needs of wireless operators. The company has over 40 years of business experience and its skills and expertise are a very good fit with SST, Copley added.

This statement was endorsed by Mark Perkins, Managing Director of R T Masts, who added: SpectraSite Transco is very well established as one of Europe’s leading tower providers, and we anticipate tremendous opportunities for further growth in both the 2G and 3G marketplaces.
