SOUTHERN BELL ESTABLISHES THE FIRST FULL PUBLIC ISDN IN THE US

By CBR Staff Writer

The Southern Bell unit of BellSouth Corp has established what it says is the first full public Integrated Services Digital Network in the US, in Atlanta, Georgia: the facility enables its first five customers to send data, speech and facsimile over the same digital line to each other, and those with fibre optic lines can send television signals as well; the five are AT&T, Hayes Microproducts, Contel, Prime Computer and the Sun Trust Banks Inc, and DEC will join soon; AT&T at the same time launched ISDN phones that flash up the caller’s number before you pick the phone, and Hayes an ISDN interface for MS-DOS micros.
