Sony reveals Playstation Now

Sony's cloud platform allows console-free gaming.

By CBR Staff Writer

Sony’s cloud platform PlayStation Now is set to enable console-less gaming, claims the firm.

The company unveiled the new cloud service at CES this week, and said it means gamers will be able to play some of the best Playstation titles without using a console.

Now works by streaming data from the company’s servers and would be accessed via computers, tablets and smartphones as well as the Japanese firm’s own smart TVs, the PlayStation 4, and the handheld PS Vita.

The new service is set to be launched in the US this summer, following a restricted test later this month, said Sony.

It added that customers would always play the latest version of a game on Now, either by paying for individual titles or by opting for a monthly subscription for unlimited access to the complete directory.

Based on technology developed by cloud gaming startup Gaikai, which Sony acquired in 2012, the new service would enable its PS4 console to play gaming titles from the PS3’s library.

In addition, Sony revealed plans to launch a TV service which will stream live television, video on demand, and DVR in the cloud.
