Sony Electronics Inc, the US subsidiary of Japan’s Sony Corp has taken the wraps off of a new color video electronic mail system. The new system, called FunMail, enables full motion color video and audio email messages, to anyone with an email address. The system comes with a small video camera that contains a built in microphone, a PCI Peripheral Component Interconnect video capture and compression card, along with email recording software that can be installed on a personal computer. The camera sits on top of a PC display, and Sony claims the captured image is near broadcast quality. To operate the recording capability, users must have Windows 95 on their PC, but messages can be received on systems running Windows 3.1, 95 and NT 3.51 or later. The product will be in the shops by the end of the month priced at $200, as well as being available via Sony Value Added Resellers.
