Sony Corp is hoping to give its best selling PlayStation video game console a shot in the with the launch of a new Tamagotchi- style personal digital assistant, called, simply, PDA. The device plugs into the console’s handheld controller and acts like an additional memory card. It can also be used separately as a game or clock. Embedded Processor Watch says that the new device will be based around Advanced RISC Machines Ltd’s ARM7 processor – a first for Sony – with 2k of SRAM and 128k of flash memory with a consumer device interconnect standard IrDA port (CI No 3,291) and 32×32 monochrome display. The unit is expected to ship in the US in the second quarter of 1999, costing $30.
